Energy Stocks Surge While Major Market Indexes Break Lower
Stock index futures were trading above fair value ahead of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve announcement, with limited volatility expected before 2:30 p.m. Crude oil remained above $100 while gold moved higher, and the energy sector continued to lead, with oil and gas exploration and Canadian energy stocks posting strong gains. Suncor reached its $100 price target, while gasoline also made a new high and natural gas returned to a buy signal.
The broader market remained mixed, with new lows in several major indexes and bond-market weakness. The Russell 2000 was particularly weak, approaching its 200-day moving average, while the TLT remained near all-time lows. Among individual stocks, Transocean generated a buy signal, while several technology and consumer names remained under pressure. The key focus for the remainder of the day is how markets respond to the Fed announcement after 2:30 p.m.
